Amazon's Jeff Bezos throws down the gauntlet to rival retailers to boost wages

The move comes after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos issued a challenge to other retailers without naming them, about matching Amazon's pay and benefits.

"Today I challenge our top retail competitors (you know who you are!) match our employee benefits and our $15 minimum wage". We will work hard to make them good bets, but not all good bets will ultimately pay out.

Amazon has faced pressure over allegations of low pay and poor working conditions in recent years.

Amazon's wage hike came as USA unemployment was at a near two-decade low, with retailers and shippers competing for hundreds of thousands of workers for the all-important holiday shopping season. In a tweet, Dan Barlett, Walmart's executive vice president of corporate affairs, wrote, "Hey retail competitors out there (you know who you are) how about paying your taxes?"

Nexus 6P Bootloop Issues Will Cost Google, Huawei $9.75M
Back in 2017, folks at XDA Developers found out an official fix to get rid of the bootloop problem on Nexus 6P units as well. The lawsuit claimed that Google has breached the device warranty as the company and manufacturers were aware of the issue.

Walmart was quick to rain on Amazon's parade, alluding to the fact that the wage hike was partly made possible because Amazon paid no federal income tax on its $11 billion in profits in 2018 while also getting a $129 million tax rebate.

Responding to a news report on Amazon's satellite launch on Twitter, Mr Musk tagged Jeff Bezos calling him a copycat using a cat emoticon for portion of his tweet. It covered 250,000 Amazon employees and 100,000 seasonal workers.

Amazon also offers the Career Choice program that pays up to 95 percent of education tuition and fees for workers. The pilots staging protests are from Atlas Air, Southern Air and ABX Air.

And it appears that Amazon, well-known for giving low priority to the short-term growth interests of Wall Street, will continue taking big risks if it sees a potential pay-off in the long run. "Developers doubled the number of Alexa skills to over 80,000, and customers spoke to Alexa tens of billions more times in 2018 compared to 2017. Amazon will be experimenting at the right scale for a company of our size if we occasionally have multibillion-dollar failures". Last year, Bezos said the wage hike came after he "listened to our critics".
