"Issues of allegiance and loyalty to one's country come with painful history", Belén Sisa, Sanders's national deputy press secretary, told Politico in response to posting the question in a Facebook thread.

In a Facebook post discussing Sanders' support for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who has been criticized by Democrats and Republicans alike in recent weeks over similar remarks interpreted as anti-Semitic, Sisa questioned whether the USA government and American Jews have "a dual allegiance to the state of Israel?" Bernie Sanders's (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign has apologized for asking whether the "American-Jewish community has a dual allegiance to the State of Israel", a remark that reflects a longtime anti-Semitic trope.

She deleted the Facebook posts after Politico confronted her about her remarks.

When asked by another Facebook user if her boss, who is Jewish, has "dual loyalty", she replied, "I think I would probably have to ask him?"

President Trump called on her to resign or be barred from serving on congressional committees, saying, "Anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress". "They're more than willing to pose with Omar on magazine covers, but when she tried to talk about a truly hard topic, which is her job as an elected official, and her life was in danger, they kind of threw her under the bus".

It was not the first time Omar had been criticized for imputing that Israel's most vocal American backers had been in some way compromised by their support for the state, leading to Democratic infighting over how to respond. However, we are concerned not merely with the harsh consequences of those words, but with the obsessive hatred that produced them, and the ultimate objective for which they were enunciated - to erode American support for the State of Israel, the miracle that symbolizes Jewish history and Jewish aspirations. Rabbi Spero further points to Omar's position on the highly sensitive House Foreign Affairs Committee. "There's definitely talk about people wanting someone to run against her".

But she's also continued to employ controversial rhetoric when discussing Israel, American foreign policy and lobbying.

Is controversy over Rep. Ilhan Omar threatening Democratic unity?

Sanders, who is Jewish, defended Omar in a statement last week. "We must not, however, equate anti-Semitism with legitimate criticism of the right-wing, Netanyahu government in Israel", the Vermont independent said.

"Support is really strong for Congresswoman Omar", Jenkins said, " but certainly there is some acrimony. She went on to back Omar's re-election.
