YouTube launches music streaming services in India

With the launch of YouTube Music, users in India will now be able to listen to their favorite music, explore new music, and get a personalized feed, catering to their preferences.

While users will be able to stream the music for free in the ad-supported version of the application, the company is also offering paid membership with additional features such as playing songs in the background, offline downloads and an ad-free experience for ₹99 per month. YouTube Music Premium is priced Rs 99 a month.

YouTube Premium will be available for ₹129 a month and will include membership to YouTube Music Premium. Additionally, YouTube is also offering a special introductory offer of 3 months of free YouTube Music Premium, so go ahead and try the service for yourself. Interestingly, YouTube Music has been expanded to the country just days after the launch of Spotify.

The YouTube Music app is also highly personalised and as you select the artistes you like more similar artists are shown for you to select.

YouTube music platform will now be available in India to cash in on the rising data consumption and demand for Indian melodies across the globe, a director of Google's popular video service said Tuesday.

India's music streaming market is attracting global giants and YouTube is the latest to enter the competitive sector. "With YouTube Music, we are hoping to bring the best in global and Indian music to millions of fans across India, and give them an immersive music experience, with the magic of music on YouTube", said Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music, YouTube.

The YouTube Music app is available on both, Android and iOS, and can be downloaded off their respective App Stores. There is also a good recommendations engine that starts throwing up music you are likely to like based on what you have already listened to. Their Offline Mixtape will also automatically download up to 100 songs they love onto their mobile device.

Apart from Originals, YouTube Music subscribers get access to official songs, singles, live performances, and remixes.

An AI search feature will let you search for songs using descriptions and lyrics, which should make for a very interesting experience.

Over the previous year artists like Guru Randhawa, Badshah, Arijit Singh and Neha Kakkar have reached the YouTube music country charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, along with the global chart.

YouTube Music will be going head-to-head with the likes of Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, JioSaavn, and Gaana in the country. This is available on a free three-month trial. Given the limited catalogue of the original content on YouTube Premium, the service is not really a competitor to any of the video streaming services like Netflix or Prime Video and will only look enticing to the consumers who want to enhance their YouTube watching experience, more than getting any extra content.
