Honda to recall about 1M vehicles in the US with Takata airbags

Honda became aware of the issue after a Honda Odyssey crash, where the front airbag deployed and injured the driver's arm.

Honda uses a "Takata" airbag system uses ammonium nitrate for their airbag inflation.

The latest recall applies to certain 2003 through 2014 model-year Acura and Honda cars and crossover SUVs built with Takata airbag inflators that may have been contaminated with moisture before they were installed. Over 700,000 Acura and Honda cars were manufactured in Canada in 2013.

Included are the 2001 to 2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, the 2001 to 2005 Civic, the 2002 to 2007 and 2010 and 2011 CR-V, the 2003 to 2011 Element, the 2007 Fit, the 2002 to 2004 Odyssey, the 2003 to 2008 Pilot, and the 2006 to 2014 Ridgeline pickup. Also covered are Acura luxury models including the MDX from 2003 through 2006, the EL from 2001 through 2005, the TL from 2002 and 2003 and the CL from 2003. Some had replacement parts from other manufacturers that are safe.

The agency is urging the owners of 1.1 million Honda and Acura vehicles who have already had the air bag inflater replaced or have received a new air bag to check whether their vehicle identification number is on the recall list. In early February 2019, Honda Ridgeline vehicles were recalled for catching fire when going through a auto wash.

A NHTSA investigation into Takata air bag inflators remains open.

Honda Motor Co said on Tuesday its American unit will recall about 1.1 million Acura and Honda vehicles in the United States to fix a defect in Takata airbags in driver's seat.

This set of recalls is part of the largest series of automotive recalls in USA history, which includes as many as 70 million vehicles recalled. About 100 million inflators are to be recalled worldwide.
