Nearly three years after news of the breakdown of "The Pirates of the Caribbean" star's marriage to Amber Heard hit the public record, Depp is now suing his ex-wife and "Aquaman" star for $50 million for defamation.
Depp's lawyers also say that the op-ed negatively affected Depp's career, claiming that it cost him the role of Jack Sparrow in the ongoing Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Amber Heard first accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence in 2016, a year after they were married, and finalised their divorce in 2017.
"She purported to write from the perspective of "a public figure representing domestic abuse" and claimed that she "felt the full force of our culture's wrath for women who speak out" when she "spoke up against sexual violence", stated the lawyers.
"Ms. Heard is not a victim of domestic abuse, she is a perpetrator", says the suit, while calling the allegations against Depp as "hoax".
Depp's lawsuit claimed that the piece was based on "false allegations" meant to "advance her career".
Ms Heard's attorney Eric George told People magazine that Mr Depp's legal action is an attempt to silence his ex-wife but "she will not be silenced". "She will not be silenced", the statement reads.
"But while he appears hell-bent on achieving self destruction, we will prevail in defeating this groundless lawsuit and ending the continued vile harassment of my client by Mr. Depp and his legal team."Representatives for Depp did not respond to request for comment on the filing. However, if their past legal entanglements are any indication, expect the ambassador on women's rights at the American Civil Liberties Union to not enter her own POV into the docket soon".
SpaceX successfully launches unmanned crew capsule into orbit
Bridenstine is optimistic about both SpaceX and Boeing capsules, saying astronauts should begin using them by this year's end. For SpaceX, sending an astronaut into orbit would be a culmination of years of hard work and high-risk investment.
In December, Ms Heard, also an actor, wrote an article for the Washington Post describing the backlash she faced due to speaking out about domestic violence.
Although Heard never named Depp in the 2018 piece, the actor's attorneys argue the article "depends on the central premise that Ms. Heard and advance her career".
Depp is suing for defamation and asking for damages in excess of US$50 million ($73.6m).
As for the accusation in 2016, the suit resulted in a restraining order against Depp and separate non disclosure agreements to not publicly speak of their relationship.
"The op-ed's clear implication that Mr Depp is a domestic abuser is categorically and demonstrably false", Depp's lawsuit states.
The pair were married for a short time from February 2015 to May 2016.
Heard filed for divorce from Depp in May, 2016 and the couple officially ended its marriage the following January.
