Supporters of the proposal, however, argued that the cost of not implementing federal policies to fight climate change would far exceed that of the Green New Deal.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Markey are co-sponsors of the bill, introduced earlier this month, and have been active advocates for the passage of the Green New Deal and its long term benefits on the environment.

So far, not a single Green New Deal supporter accepted Republicans' invitation to testify at the forum except for Ocasio-Cortez herself - however, her staff later said she might not be able to attend because of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen's testimony.

McConnell said he plans to force a vote on the Green New Deal some time before August recess. "He's the one who brought it up", Durbin said.

For Monday's protest, members of the Sunrise Movement wore black and yellow shirts announcing their support for the Green New Deal and aimed to deliver a petition with 100,000 signatures from like-minded people across the country. "And we're going to be voting on that in the Senate".

We need a network of students and workers - as well as Indigenous activists, who have always led on environmental justice, most recently in battles against new pipelines - to build mass assemblies, protests and strikes for a Green New Deal. "Because right here in the real world, the poster child for high-speed rail in California has simply run off the tracks, right before our eyes", Graves said with a laugh.

Many Democrats also talked around the "Green New Deal" itself, instead focusing their comments on climate change as a broader issue. On numerous points that the Democrats have presented, the Republicans-most notably President Trump-have exaggerated them so that it is muddy at best.

On Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez urged that climate change is an issue that needs to be addressed now, tweeting, "Climate delayers aren't much better than climate deniers".

But over the past few days, moderates have signaled they want to keep the "Green New Deal" centered on climate change and not get themselves into trouble with centrist constituencies by supporting the more progressive elements of the plan. But curiously enough, this planned vote was met with outrage from the very people claiming to champion the proposal.

Her response? "I've been doing this for 30 years".

House Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., last week said that after he read the resolution, he asked Markey, "What the heck is this?"

Chairman Peter DeFazio, D-Oregon, implored members to find common ground and focus on "pragmatic yet effective solutions to mitigate carbon emissions and provide for resilient infrastructure", rather than "spar over the Green New Deal".

"The games they are playing here will have no meaning".
