A 14-year-old girl is the region's latest flu-related death, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services agency. A 3-year-old boy from Highland County in Southwest Ohio also died as a result of the flu.
In Cleveland, 11 adults have died this season, and almost 250 people have been hospitalized for flu-associated illnesses, officials said. "The Department of Public Health urges people to get vaccinated, to wash their hands, cover their cough and sneeze and stay home when sick to limit the spread of disease".
"Pediatric influenza deaths are very unfortunate".
Compared to patterns in summers, an estimated 1 percent increase in flu and flu-like illness in the fall was associated with a 1.5 percent increase in deaths among kidney failure patients.
Dr. Albert Wu, an internist and professor of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, said the study is a reminder that many respiratory infections other than flu can be deadly.

The typical flu season starts in October and can go until May, but it usually spikes during December to February, according to CDPH.
