The phenomenon happens when the Moon's closest approach to Earth, called its perigee, coincides with a full moon. Although in India, you won't be able to see the Moon at its closest because it is falling during the day, the full moon will be visible in the country.

EarthSky notes that astronomers usually refer to "supermoons" as perigean full moons - a term that simply refers to the moon being "near earth".

Basically, it's the closest it will be while also being a full moon.

Native Americans and Europeans gave February the "snow moon" title because it was the month associated with heavy snowfall, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. "Following this, on March 21st, the 'worm moon" will reach its full phase about 29 hours after the moon reaches perigee.

On average, supermoons only appear about once every 14 months, according to National Geographic.

The world including Pakistan witnessed a spectacular view of "Super Blue Blood Moon" on Tuesday. This moon will be at its closest to Earth at 4:07 am EST (0907 GMT).

The supermoon has also been seen rising over Turkey's capital, Ankara. However, this event usually has lesser attention because this kind of moon is invisible from Earth.

The moon looks particularly large because it's at its closet point to Earth.

"As NASA and its commercial and worldwide partners plan to return the moon over the next decade with a long-term continued presence, the list of moon walkers will surely include women, as well", Adams said.

Because of the nature of the snow moon, it's possible that the snowy weather just might come between you and this wow-worthy celestial moment. However, this included a total lunar eclipse visible in all of North and South America.

The rare event isn't expected to return to Irish skies until March 2026, so better take a look up while you can!

For sky watchers in New York City, the snow moon will rise on February 19th at 5:46 pm, and set the next morning at 7:35 am, local time.
