Gov. Gavin Newsom of California is expected on Monday to withdraw almost 400 of his state's National Guard troops from deployment along the border with Mexico and assign them to other duties, according to aides to the governor.
In her own statement, Lujan Grisham said New Mexico would "not take part in the president's charade of border fear-mongering by misusing our diligent National Guard troops". The Times added, "The governor's office is separately requesting funding from the federal government to add at least 150 troops with the California National Guard's Counterdrug Task Force, according to Nathan Click, a spokesman for the governor". 110 members are expected to work with the California Department of Forestry and Fire; 100 members will be transferred to intelligence operations against drug cartels. The governor's office says some of these troops who are "specially trained counter-narcotic screeners" will be deployed to California ports of entry - both at the Mexican border and elsewhere.
Under a "general order" that Mr. Newsom plans to sign on Monday, 110 California National Guard troops will be redirected to support the state's central fire agency, Cal Fire, and another 100 will work on statewide "intelligence operations" aimed at worldwide criminal drug gangs.
The original mission, approved by former California Gov.
At a news conference Monday, Newsom called Americans lazy, saying they should question why the Trump Administration wants to spend $5.7 billion on border security.
"The border "emergency" is nothing more than a manufactured crisis - and [California's] National Guard will not be part of this political theater", Newsom said on Twitter. He made clear his intention to challenge Trump on border and immigration policy, and there is no indication that this will be anything but wildly popular in California.
Aaron Ramsey 'signs £400k-a-week Juventus deal'
But he has now committed to a four-year contract with Juventus and will join the Italian champions at the end of the season. Wages were not disclosed, but Goal understands Ramsey will earn €7 million (£6m/$8m) plus bonuses per year.
Trump's demand for $5.7 billion to help build that wall was central to a 35-day partial USA government shutdown that ended last month.
Newsom, who in his position serves as the Commander-in-Chief for the California National Guard, explained that for about 360 members of the California National Guard now working at the U.S. -Mexico border at the request of the White House for help in federal government in border operations, new plans are to draw them down by March 31, and specifically reassigned them.
Newsom's decision to rollback Brown's troop deployment at the border does not come as a surprise.
Just a month into his governorship of the nation's most populous state, Newsom has sparred with Trump on immigration and other issues.
Brown also ordered that the guard members not enforce immigration laws or participate in the building of a border barrier.
