Kyler Murray Announces He’s Choosing The NFL Over Baseball

Dolphins rumors: Kyler Murray ‘would make a lot of sense’ for Miami

Kyler Murray announces major decision about future in the NFL

Because of Murray's height and slight build, there is some apprehension from NFL evaluators about his long-term success in football.

Heisman Trophy victor Kyler Murray has committed his future to football. If he's selected anywhere in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, he can expect to earn more than twice what he'd have earned with the Athletics' signing bonus; last year's No. 32 overall pick, Lamar Jackson, signed for almost $9.5MM and will earn the entirety of that sum.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network noted that Murray received about a $5 million signing bonus from Oakland (which he'll have to repay), and if he's the last pick in the NFL's first round, he'll get almost $5 million as a signing bonus and roughly $10 million guaranteed.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray speaks during an NCAA college football media day on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018, in Miami Gardens, Fla. Although the A's were hoping he'd choose baseball, they were increasingly pessimistic the longer his locker in their spring-training clubhouse sat empty. Football has been my love and passion my entire life.

Murray's baseball deal called for him to receive $1.5 million within 30 days of the deal's approval last summer by Major League Baseball and $3.16 million on March 1.

The Oakland Athletics selected Murray with the ninth pick of the 2018 MLB draft after posting a.296 batting average and 10 home runs as a centerfielder for Oklahoma's baseball team a year ago.

The NFL Combine is set to begin on February 26 with the 2019 NFL Draft scheduled for April 25 in Nashville. Billy Beane, Oakland's executive vice president of baseball operation, said talks are continuing with Murray, who may drop baseball to pursue an National Football League career. He ran for 1,001 yards and another 12 scores, posting the second-best passer efficiency rating in FBS history. "The situation is fluid right now and based on a historic college football season that the young man had".

Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, Murray will return $1.29 million of the $1.5 million signing bonus money the A's gave him.
