Measles: Washington Gov. Jay Inslee declares a state of emergency

Inslee declares state of emergency over Washington measles outbreak

State of emergency declared in US measles outbreak

There has been one recorded case in King County, which is the area around Seattle. However, children younger than 5 years and adults older than 20 years are more likely to suffer from measles complications.

Officials with Southwest District Health in Caldwell, Idaho say so far no measles cases have been reported in Idaho as a result of the outbreak.

Portland is in this county.

Health department officials have connected 27 of the Clark County measles cases to non-immunized people while four cases remain unverified.

Around 88 per cent of children in the province have been sufficiently vaccinated against the disease.

"Clark County is now reporting 30 cases of measles", Inslee said Friday.

Locations and venues include Portland International Airport, at the Moda Center during a Portland Trail Blazers basketball game, an Amazon Locker location and stores such as Costco and Ikea.

Health officials warn he came in contact with hundreds of people.

LOS ANGELES: A state of emergency was declared on Friday in the western U.S. state of Washington following a measles outbreak that has affected more than two dozen people, the majority of them children.

People who choose not to vaccinate their children are underestimating the dangers of the illness, said Melnick, who himself had measles as a child, before the vaccine was commonplace.

The CDC recommends people get the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to protect against those viruses.

Monika Naus, a medical director with BCCDC is warning the public that measles outbreaks still happen on the continent.

Clark County - which is in the southwest part of Washington and close to Portland - has a lower vaccination rate than almost any other county in the state. Those infected can spread measles to others four days before and four days after the rash appears. The measles vaccine consists of two shots, one given by age 2 and the second usually between ages 4 and 6.

Two doses of the vaccine in childhood are 97 percent effective and provide lifetime immunity.

"Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease that can be fatal in small children", Inslee said in his proclamation Friday, adding that these cases create "an extreme public health risk that may quickly spread to other counties".
