Sarah Thomas was the first woman to referee a college football bowl game, and the first full-time female referee in the NFL, and she has now made further history by becoming the first woman to referee an NFL playoff game.
Not only is Thomas's presence on the gridiron notable.
The moves come on the heels of the of the National Basketball Association announcing that referees Ashley Moyer-Gleich and Natalie Sago would be promoted to full-time status back in November, becoming the fourth and fifth women in league history to reach that level. This is her fourth season as an official in the league.

Though Thomas has been the only female referee in the league for much of her career, Jen Welter, the first female NFL assistant coach, said that when she was hired in 2015, she "started the dominos" for women in the league. "So tucking my hair, I blend in and I'm just another official".
She said she was honored to be considered a "trailblazer" for female officials.
This will be a special moment for Thomas, a Brandon, Mississippi resident with three children, and a monumental postseason game for the entire NFL.
"I've just been doing this truly because I love it", she said.
