Flu taking toll in California, other states, but having milder impact nationwide, data show

Flu Now Officially Widespread Across Iowa

CDC has estimated the burden of flu since 2010. Past year at this time, the proportion of outpatient visits for flu-like illness was 5.8%.

Three preschoolers have died in Saskatchewan as a result of the flu so far this season, according to the provincial health ministry.

Federal health officials say that the flu is now widespread in Alabama - and it's expected to increase.

While states such as California and North Carolina have seen significant numbers of flu-related deaths this season, US health officials said Friday that the nationwide impact of influenza seems to be milder than last winter.

In North Carolina, state health officials said six people died from the flu last week, raising the death toll for the season to 16.

By comparison, there were 195 pediatric hospitalizations over the same period last season.

One death was associated with an influenza A (H3) virus, one death was associated with an influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 virus and one death was associated with an influenza A virus for which no subtyping was performed.

Statewide, 331 people have been hospitalized due to flu complications, including 38 in Oklahoma County, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health. In the past, CDC provided these estimates at the end of each flu season.
