Macedonians' vote for new name ends rift with Greece

Macedonia Lawmakers Set Again To Debate Name Change Amid Uncertainty

Greece-FYR Macedonia dispute: MPs back historic name change to Republic of North Macedonia

Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia PM Zoran Zaev hugs a MP after the Parliament voted to change the country name to North Macedonia.

The republic of just over two million people was formally invited to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance in 2008, but its membership was vetoed by Greece, where there is strong opposition to Macedonia's name.

On Friday, 81 out of 120 members of the parliament supported the amendments needed to rename Macedonia to the Republic of North Macedonia, which is expected to open the way for the country's accession to NATO and the European Union. The remaining opposition lawmakers stayed away in protest, according to the Associated Press reports.

Representatives of the conservative opposition VMRO-DPMNE boycotted the vote.

The agreement on changing the name comes after a 27-year dispute, with Greece complaining that the name Macedonia implies claims on Greece's own territory and cultural heritage.

Delays had marked the October vote that launched the procedure to change the constitution, also with a two-thirds majority.

Stoltenberg said in a tweet that the name change deal is "an important contribution to a stable and prosperous region".

She said the European Union strongly supports the deal and will "fully support" Macedonia's goal of joining the EU.

The change won't be official until the Greek parliament approves it.

"The United States sees this as a historic opportunity to advance stability, security and prosperity throughout the region", Pompeo said in a statement released from Washington.

Several hundred people have been protesting outside FYR Macedonia's parliament in recent days.

"The vote on constitutional amendments that changed the name, identity, history and culture was done against the constitution".

Friday's vote brought an end to months of political bickering in Macedonia that included a controversial consultative referendum in September and a long parliamentary battle.

The Macedonia accord has strained relations between Greek\ Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his junior coalition partner Panos Kammenos.

Mickoski told reporters the move Friday to change the country's name to North Macedonia to appease neighboring Greece was made against the desires of the Macedonian people "and is an act of treason".

Greece is bound by terms of the deal to stop blocking Macedonia from NATOand other worldwide groups and to allow it to start European Union accession talks as part of the deal.
