Samsung smart TVs are getting iTunes and AirPlay 2 support

As Apple continues to make a significant push into services, Samsung earlier today announced that their upcoming lineup of 2019 smart HDTVs will, for the first time, allow users to buy or rent movies and TV shows via iTunes. It's also worth noting that Samsung's selection of 2018 smart HDTVs will offer similar support once a firmware update rolls out. "AirPlay 2 support will be available on Samsung Smart TVs in 190 countries worldwide", the company announced on Sunday at the CES 2019 here.

This is a big deal.

Those that want Apple's Siri smart assistant on their televisions will still require an Apple TV set-top box, although iTunes on Samsung televisions will work with Samsung's Bixby smart assistant. In the past Apple has toyed with the idea of launching their own TV range.

Meanwhile Samsung stated: "In an industry first, a new iTunes Movies and TV Shows app will debut only on Samsung Smart TVs in more than 100 countries".

The "deal shows that perhaps Apple doesn't quite view Samsung as the enemy it used to", wrote Michael Gartenberg, a former Apple marketing executive.

- "Leading TV manufacturers are integrating AirPlay 2 directly into their TVs, so now you can effortlessly share or mirror nearly anything from your iOS device or Mac directly to your AirPlay 2–enabled smart TV".
