Pele blasts Messi, calls Barcelona star

Maradona better than Messi, Neymar 'difficult to defend': Pele

While many believe the Blaugrana superstar has already established himself as the greatest player of all time, Pele is not convinced and believes there are limitations to his game.

The 78-year-old also criticised Messi for being one-footed.

Speaking in an interview with Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, Pele dismissively looked upon the Barcelona captain as having just the "one skill".

"How can you compare?"

He pointed out that to effectively compare with his own professional achievements, one would have "to shoot well with the left, shoot well with the right, and score headers".

Pele also said fellow Brazilian Neymar is a "better player" than France's World Cup victor, Kylian Mbappe.

However, Lineker, who also had the privilege to play for Barcelona in his active days thinks otherwise, took to social media to set the records straight.

In 1999, he was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), and won the FIFA Player of the Century award with Diego Maradona sharing the prize with him.

Do you think Pele is superior to Messi?

Both Pele and Maradona have flip-flopped between loving and hating Messi.

"[Franz] Beckenbauer, [Johan] Cruyff are also better".

Pele tallied over 1,000 career goals and won three World Cups, but it doesn't mean that Messi shouldn't be compared to him.

"I told him he had football to spare, I've been to Europe twice with him recently, we have discussed it and I explained it to him".
