The committee decided not to ban the film after examining closely all objections raised.
The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Ramesh Chand Khulbe, also advised the petitioner to approach a high-powered committee formed by the state government under the chairmanship of tourism minister Satpal Maharaj. Kedarnath is the debut movie of Saif Ali Khan's daughter Sara. The movie, set in the backdrop of the June 2013 natural tragedy that killed thousands of pilgrims in the temple town of Kedarnath, was released countrywide on 7 December.

While there has been no official ban on the film by the state government, it has written to all district magistrates (DMs) about the film and the controversies surrounding it. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Ashok Kumar said the film has been banned in seven districts, reported PTI. Legal representatives of the movie's producers as well as the Censor Board opposed the petition, which contended that Kedarnath's story is imaginary and an "untrustworthy tale of love" between a Muslim youth and a Brahmin girl.
However, the Tourism Minister today morning informed that the film has been banned in Uttarakhand claiming that it "hurts the religious sentiments of many people". Previously, the Supreme Court came down heavily on individual states against opting for a blanket ban across states according to the whims of state governments.
With the latest orders by the DMs, it would mean that the film will not release now in state capital Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Tehri, Nainital, Almora and Udhamsinghnagar.
