John Kelly is expected to resign as White House chief of staff in the coming days, two sources familiar with the situation unfolding in the West Wing tell CNN.

Kelly answered a narrow set of questions from investigators in recent months after White House lawyers objected to Mueller's initial request to do the interview earlier this summer, the sources said.

The move could be announced at a scheduled White House dinner tonight with Trump and senior White House staff.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Trump seemed to be directing calls away from Kelly and toward Nick Ayers-Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff-who has always been rumored as Kelly's eventual replacement. Former White House Counsel Don McGahn was likewise forced out of his job after it was reported that he had cooperated extensively in Mueller's probe. Nick Ayers, the vice president's chief of staff, is seen as a leading candidate. Trump re-nominated him in 2017 for a second term.

CNN's Kaitlan Collins reported on Friday that Trump and Kelly had reached a "stalemate in their relationship", and had stopped speaking to one another. The lights were off in his West Wing office. "It's not his strength", Trump said.

But the story line of Kelly's departure has been protracted for so many months that White House aides often now just shrug. Investigators reportedly wanted to know about reports that Trump had attempted to fire the special prosecutor.
