Former Oklahoma City Thunder guard and New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher has been hired to coach the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks.

Fisher, a five-time National Basketball Association champion, played 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association.

Fisher was a member of five National Basketball Association championship teams with the Lakers during an 18-season National Basketball Association playing career that also included stints with four other teams.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Fisher will officially be introduced at a press conference on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles. "Derek is a champion and proven leader on and off the court".

The Sparks announced the move Wednesday, five days after longtime WNBA coach Brian Agler resigned.

Parker, who has been with the Sparks since 2008, said in a statement: "Derek is a great basketball mind who brings a ton of high-level experience to our team". He is the winningest coach in WNBA history. Agler led Los Angeles to back-to-back WNBA Finals appearances, including winning the 2016 WNBA title. That being said, Fisher's a midseason firing after compiling a 40-96 record in one-plus seasons marred his tenure in NY.
