This cell is created to be insulated from the rest of the vehicle, so that it does not require unneeded mechanical alterations, with umbilicals providing power to the car's electrical system, with the whole powertrain controlled by a small screen that is fitted to the interior.
You could go all out and have a classic Aston converted to an EV, but could you live with yourself for forever ruining the history and heritage of a low-volume classic auto?
Paul Spires, president of Aston Martin Works, further explained the logic behind the Heritage EV. It proved so popular that Jaguar in August confirmed production plans for the conversion, which like Aston Martin's setup is fully reversible.
First to be equipped with the new "cassette" electric powertrain is a 1970 DB6 MkII Volante, the company said. Aston Martin says the cassette is a "self-contained cell" that sits on the original engine and transmission mounts.
Aston Martin aims to keep the interior as original as possible only installing a small screen to control the EV powertrain
Aston Martin reckons it has the answer in the form of a "cassette" electric powertrain.
Aston Martin announced Wednesday that it has constructed a prototype for a reversible electric vehicle conversion, applicable to its historic models to preserve their drivability for future generations. The car's electrics are powered off the system, as well.
"We are very aware of the environmental and social pressures that threaten to restrict the use of classic cars in the years to come", Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda president and chief executive, was quoted in the company's news release. "I believe this not only makes Aston Martin unique, but a truly forward-thinking leader in this field". Speaking of the latter, owners can have the original powertrain reinstalled with relative ease as the conversion doesn't require major modifications. Heritage EV conversions are expected to start in 2019.
