Phillies acquire Segura, Nicasio and Pazos from Mariners

Two-time All Star Jean Segura is the rumored next Mariners player to be traded

Two-time All Star Jean Segura is the rumored next Mariners player to be traded

The Phillies traded Santana and shortstop J.P. Crawford to the Mariners on Monday for shortstop Jean Segura, right-handed reliever Juan Nicasio and left-handed reliever James Pazos. When it happens, the Mariners won't even be close to concluding their business this offseason, as they will continue to tear everything down for a massive rebuild.

Segura, 28, hit.304/.341/.415 with 29 doubles, 10 homers, 20 steals and 91 runs last season. The deal isn't expected to affect their pursuit of Manny Machado or Bryce Harper. He had been up and down in the Phillies organization and thought once touted as one of their top prospects, he had fallen out of favor somewhat. Defensively, Segura has appeared in 763 career games at shortstop and 142 games at second base.

The Seattle Mariners are continuing to trade away veteran players, with shortstop Jean Segura being the latest to be moved. Of his 1,080 swings, 527 were put in play, giving him the ninth-best contact rate at 48.8 percent.

On the surface, this deal helps the Phillies even aside from the fact that they acquired an immediate upgrade at shortstop, making the almost $70 million in salary they're taking on between Segura and Nicasio well worth it.

The Phillies are also able to move on from J.P. Crawford.

We did not expect this turn of events, but we enthusiastically accept the new reality where we all relate to Nick Fury . There's no official word on that yet, but we'll be willing it to be true with every fibre of our beings.

Shortstop was a place Phillies General Manager Matt Klentak was not happy with last season.

Segura first became a name to look out for in 2013 when he was named to his first MLB All-Star game as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.

At shortstop last season, Segura only had 17 errors and a fielding percentage of.969, which is a vast improvement from 2017 where he had a.962 Fld%.

J.P. Crawford, the 13th pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball draft, played 49 games for the Phillies past year. He could be a quality lead-off man if that's the path the Phillies choose.
