William and Kate could not help themselves and indulged in a little festive fun after staging a Santa's grotto in the grounds of their Kensington Palace home for more than 200 wives, girlfriends, parents and grandparents holding the fort at home.

While happily chatting with the women and men serving their country, Kate asked if she'd met any of their kids the other day, adding: "I hope they enjoyed it".

"From my time in uniform, we both know a bit of what it feels like to balance your work commitments with your family life".

After handing them over to members of 11 Squadron at RAF Akrotiri, the duke said: "You all put duty first". His wife playfully volleyed back, "You're a nightmare with that!"

After attending the Queen's diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace last night, the couple flew out of RAF Brize Norton early this morning.

The party was thrown to lend support to the families who may be separate from their loved ones this holiday season while they serve in the military.

They also met personnel from the lead infantry company of 2 Mercians, who have recently been supporting Op TORAL in Afghanistan.

Prince William laughed with military personnel.

She said: 'But I can't imagine how it feels when your loved ones are away on active service over Christmas or at those special family moments. "I'm sorry that we couldn't bring your families with us for Christmas".

However, Palace insiders have played down the rumours, and the couples are expected to spend Christmas together at Sandringham later this month.
