Redskins coach Jay Gruden says team 'discussed' Kaepernick

Fans clamoring for Redskins to sign Colin Kaepernick after latest injury

Alex Smith broke his fibula and tibia in Week 11. The Redskins signed Mark Sanchez in November, and Sanchez became the team's new starter on Monday after McCoy went down against the Eagles.

Redskins quarterback Mark Sanchez entered the game after Colt McCoy suffered a fractured fibula in the second quarter.

"This is a tough blow", Jay Gruden said. Sanchez's experience in a prostyle offense helped out a lot. Or, he said, they want someone who is similar in style to Sanchez. There are various read option plays he ran in San Francisco that the Redskins could easily incorporate. Redskins defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was the 49ers' head coach for one season during Kaepernick's time. "If it was Week 1, there would be a better possibility".

The Buckeyes trounced Northwestern 45-24 on Saturday night, one week after routing archrival MI in their annual showdown. It missed out in the 2015 season and previous year , when Pac-12 teams combined to go 1-8 during bowl season.

"In order to utilize someone like Colin Kaepernick's skill set, you're talking about a whole new group of formations and run concepts", Gruden said.

It doesn't appear Kaepernick will get the same chance Sanchez did Monday - to play for the first time since the 2016 season.

However, Gruden did say if the injuries to his quarterbacks occurred earlier in the season, there would be a greater interest in Kaepernick. He threw an interception and fumbled once, though he recovered the ball. He underwent surgery to fix his fibula Tuesday. And yet again, they have the opportunity to essentially end the season of an NFC East rival and keep pace with the resurgent Cowboys. He filed a grievance against the National Football League past year, saying team owners colluded to keep him off rosters.
