George Herbert Walker Bush took the oath of office as the United States' 41st president on January 20, 1989, and was the oldest living former commander in chief.

"From a decorated Naval aviator who almost gave his life in the World War II, to Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces, with plenty of posts along the way". George H.W. Bush paired his profound sense of personal responsibility with honesty, gentility, and hard work.

His death comes less than eight months after his wife Barbara died .

He added that Mr Bush's extensive record of public service was rare, with his years in the military, in U.S. congress, the United Nations, China, the Central Intelligence Agency and as vice president and president.

"George H.W. Bush's life is a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling".

"As so many Americans did, I had true affection for the man George Bush", he said in a statement.

Experts said some of the risks with this particular gene editing, is a high risk of contracting other viruses, such as West Nile. They questioned whether the effort had even succeeded at its own goal of making both girls immune to HIV after seeing He's data.

Bush presided over economic malaise at home, and infuriated his fellow Republicans during a budget battle with rival Democrats by famously breaking his vow: "Read my Lips: No new taxes".

"Today we mourn the loss of a leader who has long-served as a shining example of selfless leadership and compassion".

They wrote that those whom Bush had inspired to public service were "illuminating the greatness, hope and opportunity of America to the world". And he did tremendous good along the journey.

"We can not hope only to leave our children only a bigger auto, a bigger bank account - we must hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal friend, a loving parent", Bush said. He did say that Bush's death "really puts a damper" on his participation at the summit. The Berlin Wall fell; the Soviet Union ceased to exist; the communist bloc in Eastern Europe broke up; the Cold War ended.

In late 1989, Bush sent USA troops to Panama to oust strongman Manuel Noriega.

Mr Bush served one term as president from 1989 to 1993. A family spokesman said Sunday, April 15, 2018, that the former first lady Barbara Bush is in "failing health" and won't seek additional medical treatment.
