Google is reportedly shuttting down Hangouts in 2020

Considering Google essentially stopped updating the app over a year ago, this doesn't come as much of a surprise.

If the seemingly non-existent support or lack of feature updates for Google Hangouts wasn't enough of a hint, it appears Google will be shutting Hangouts down for consumers in 2020.

As mentioned, Google already offers replacement apps for this. Google unveiled a new strategy for Hangouts in 2017 when it launched the two messaging applications Allo and Duo. The site noted Google's announcement previous year of a shift to an enterprise focus with G Suite's Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet as an early sign that such a decision was forthcoming.

According to a source familiar with the matter who spoke with 9to5Google, the closure will happen "sometime in 2020". At the same time, this app will also support messaging through the internet, like any other chat app, and will probably have a feature set that is similar to that of WhatsApp. Let us know in the comments down below. Google never revealed the total number of Hangouts users though.

Android Messages is now what the company would prefer consumers to use, but given Google's history of launching and closing chat tools (remember Allo?) users would be forgiven for wondering just how long this tool may last. The Hangouts, however, failed to get good traction.

The platform has seen several major changes since its inception but Google has put its development on the backburner, instead focusing on its more recent services: Google Allo and Duo.
