House Democrats Promise to Oppose Pelosi for Speaker

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, is likely to disarm Democrats of their trusty weapon- the circular firing

Incoming Rep. Lori Trahan to support Pelosi for speaker

The Pelosi opponents' theory is, once it's clear she doesn't have the votes, a new leader will emerge.

Some prominent members of that caucus support Pelosi.

He added that intra-caucus elections normally happen this week, but the fact that no speaker has been chosen shows Pelosi does not have the votes needed.

The California Democrat is favored by most Democrats to lead them, as she has done since 2003, when the new Congress convenes in January.

The topic of a challenge to Pelosi is a hot one and came up on Fox News Channel's Outnumbered on Monday, during which segment they noted that Pelosi's supporters include non-politicians like tennis star Martina Navratilova.

"He will not support her for speaker", Reynolds said.

Trahan, who beat out a crowded field to win the seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Niki Tsongas, told The Lowell Sun on Friday she has signed a letter backing Pelosi as Democrats prepare to formally retake the chamber in January. She is known as a precise vote counter with a keen sense of her caucus' leanings and is aided by the lack of a declared opponent and many weeks during which she can dangle choice committee assignments, rules changes and other goodies to help attract support. But Cartwright added that he wants to hear the arguments when the caucus meets privately next week to vote on the leadership team.

Trahan told the Sun there was no one else with Pelosi's experience and proven track record and that the stakes are too high.

Others signing the letter were incumbents Jim Cooper of Tennessee; Bill Foster of Illinois; Brian Higgins of New York; Stephen Lynch and Seth Moulton of Massachusetts; Ed Perlmutter of Colorado; Tim Ryan of Ohio; Kurt Schrader of OR; and Filemon Vela and Texas.

However, we also recognize that in this recent eleciton, Democrats ran and won on a message of change.

Sixteen members opposing her leadership is a serious threat because Pelosi needs 218 votes to seize the gavel - but Democrats only have 233 seats, so 16 members could tank her bid for the position.

Democratic aides involved in the effort to oust Pelosi but not authorized to comment publicly said they are confident additional lawmakers would oppose Pelosi in a floor vote beyond those who signed the letter. He or she sets the agenda for the chamber and is second in line to the presidency if President Donald Trump were to die in office or become incapacitated. "She's a next generation leader that people will look to and say, 'That's the future of our party, that's the future of our country, and that's exactly the kind of leader that I want to see as our next speaker'". Fudge has said she will decide after Thanksgiving if she is running.

But making a deal with Republicans to get the votes would also give Republicans effective veto power over a Democratic speaker, and a motion to vacate the chair could theoretically be called at any time.
