- Ex-Minnesota Viking great Alan Page was honored Friday by President Donald Trump with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It was given to seven people, including three posthumously. Orrin Hatch and six others at a White House ceremony. It's the highest honor American can give to a civilian.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Maureen Scalia (wife of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia), and Dr. Miriam Adelson after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House on November 16, 2018. The Adelsons have donated millions to Trump and the GOP in recent years.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom was created in 1963 by President John F Kennedy, and in the past it has gone to icons of American culture and history such as Martin Luther King Jr, Walt Disney and Frank Sinatra.

The decision to grant Adelson the award was met by some criticism because Adelson, a physician and philanthropist, is also well known for being a political power player with her billionaire husband Sheldon Adelson.

Miriam Adelson said she is "deeply humbled and moved by this exceptional honor". Trump calls Hatch a "great friend" who "liked me right from the beginning and therefore I like him". Sheldon Adelson was with Trump on midterm election night last week.

"Wow", the president said as he pondered the nine offspring.

The other recipients are retiring Sen.

After his career playing sports and entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Page had a second life as a jurist, rising to serve on Minnesota's Supreme Court.

Alyssa Farrah, Vice President Mike Pence's current press secretary, wrote in a 2013 Mic story about the Obama-era honorees, arguing that "awarding favors to political supporters is hardly a new practice in the USA, but bestowing one of the nation's historically most prestigious honors to a roll call of presidential donors may raise eyebrows".

Devine said that while Miriam Adelson isn't the first campaign contributor to receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the size of her campaign contributions sets her apart from the rest.
