2018 Silver Slugger awards: J.D. Martinez becomes first player to win two awards in one season

Going forward, the age-28 second baseman remains a favorite for the award in subsequent seasons if he remains relatively healthy. Though everyone knew he had a season for the ages, Thursday's Silver Slugger Award announcements all but confirmed it. He along with Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, George Springer, Moises Alou, Carlos Lee, Morgan Ensberg, Mike Hampton, Glenn Davis, Jose Cruz, and Dickie Thon as the only players in club history to win a Silver Slugger.

The award is voted on by the managers and coaches in Major League Baseball.

With Silver Sluggers in 2018 and 2016, Betts is now the seventh Red Sox player to win the award in multiple years, joining David Ortiz (7), Wade Boggs (6), Manny Ramirez (6), Xander Bogaerts (2), Dwight Evans (2), and Jim Rice (2).

The Cubs' second baseman and the White Sox first baseman were each named recipients of the Silver Slugger Award - given out by Louisville Slugger to the best hitter at a position in the American and National leagues.

Martinez served primarily as Boston's DH in 2018.

In his first season in Boston, J.D. Martinez mashed no matter where he played for the Red Sox.

In fact, he finished with a slash line of.330/.402/.629 with 43 home runs, a whopping 130 RBI, 37 doubles, six stolen bases, two triples, 111 runs scored and 69 walks in 649 plate appearances. It's also worth noting that the Silver Slugger does not differentiate between outfield positions.
