But so was a corresponding surge in Republican enthusiasm that allowed the president's party to counter the Democrats' new House majority with big wins in top contests for the Senate and governorships this week.

Many have threatened to use the subpoena power they will gain in January to investigate Trump and administration actions.

Anticipating the possibility of keeping the Senate but losing the House, aides in recent days had laid out the political reality to Trump, who could face an onslaught of Democratic-run investigations.

But, at least for as long as it took to type a tweet, the president struck a different tone on Wednesday, writing: "Now we can all get back to work and get things done!"

Some incumbent Democrats who voted against the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court were defeated. According to data compiled by The Associated Press, 237 women ran for the House as major-party candidates this year.

Some Democrats said during their campaigns they would not back Pelosi, but it's not clear yet if there are any Democrats willing to challenge her for the post. "It's very hard to rule out the idea that foreign policy decisions are not being kept separate from business interests".

"Regardless of the result. we believe the two governments and the two peoples all want to maintain the sound and steady development of bilateral relations because we believe it is in the best interests of the global community", Hua said.

There is also now a very real possibility that the president's tax returns will be released, and impeachment would likely be a breeze should Mueller outline crimes committed by the president in his upcoming report. Trump wrote Wednesday on Twitter. Democrats won the Republican-held seats in Florida, Kansas, Colorado, New York, Virginia, Minnesota and Pennsylvania.

But on Election Day, Republicans added to their edge in the Senate and prevailed in some key governor's race.

It means Democrats could look into everything from Chinese trademarks granted to companies linked to Trump and his daughter Ivanka, to a probable reopening of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

A House majority would be enough to impeach Trump if evidence surfaced of collusion by his campaign, or of obstruction by the president of the federal investigation. Republicans held their grip on the Senate.

"My main criticism of the Democrats is they seem to be leaderless". The House was also getting its first two Muslim women, MA elected its first black congresswoman, and Tennessee got its first female senator. Democratic women won one Republican-held seat in IL, two in Iowa, and one in Kansas.

Liberal Beto O'Rourke's underdog Senate campaign fell short in conservative Texas against Republican Ted Cruz. Democrat Janet Mills of ME and Republican Kristi Noem of South Dakota are the first women elected as governor in their state.
