Trump ousts U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, announces interim replacement

A handful of senior Republicans has warned Donald Trump not to close Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, as concerns grow he is close to doing so having fired Jeff Sessions as attorney general. Republican Senator Susan Collins of ME criticized Trump for stripping Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein of his role overseeing the probe.

"Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation", organizers said on a Facebook Event page for the protest.

The sacking followed months of Mr Trump criticising Mr Sessions, mainly for his decision to step aside from the Russian Federation inquiry in March 2017.

The departure of Mr Sessions, who was the first U.S. senator to back Mr Trump's presidential run in 2016, was long expected, and came one day after Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives but boosted their Senate majority.

Under government ethics regulation, federal employees are required to recuse themselves from matters where their impartiality could reasonably be questioned.

Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, took over supervision of the Russian Federation investigation.

"He worships him", a longtime friend said of Whitaker and Trump.

Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway suggested on Thursday morning that the question of whether Whitaker will recuse himself is absurd. "We are a democracy, we are all equal under the law".

They also said they will continue to conduct parallel investigations alongside special counsel Robert Mueller's probe, and urging them to preserve all relevant documents.

Schumer called it "paramount" that Mueller's status be protected by the new attorney general.

"I think Mr. Whitaker was a good pick", Graham said. He has said that Hillary Clinton should have been prosecuted for her email scandal as secretary of state and that Trump made the right call in firing FBI Director James Comey.

While Whitaker is now Mueller's ultimate supervisor, it was not immediately clear whether that meant Rosenstein would step aside. A court might then issue a temporary restraining order blocking his removal. He'll likely be remembered as the worst Attorney General in American history.

Nevertheless he appealed to Republicans not "beholden" to Donald Trump to reign in any attempt to fire Mueller.

There is some question whether Sessions was sacked or resigned.

The possibility that Sessions was sacked could open Whitaker's appointment to court challenge by a range of people, including Mueller, impacted by his actions.

The next month, Whitaker wrote an op-ed posted on CNN's website in which he argued that Mueller's investigation appeared to be going too far and may constitute a "witch hunt", echoing one of Trump's favorite descriptions to criticize and discredit the probe. One associate, Jerome Corsi, said in a video recording Monday that he's "been involved in a really constant basis" for two months with Mueller's investigation.
