Hof - the star of HBO's "Cathouse" series who Republican consultant Roger Stone had called "Trump from Pahrump" - had ousted a sitting Republican member of Nevada's State Assembly in a primary and was the favorite to win a seat in Carson City in November's election.

He remained on the ballot due to state law and GOP officials encouraged voters to still cast their ballots for him in order to stop Democrats winning the seat.

Hof, who ran as a Republican, defeated Democratic challenger Lesia Romanov by more than 7,000 votes, the office said.

Officials are still waiting to determine Hof's cause of death.

The thrice-divorced author of The Art of the Pimp, who appeared on HBO's Cathouse, owned a strip club and five legal brothels in Nevada, the only USA state with legalised prostitution.

"He's not going to make it to the promised land with us... but we hope he's watching from the great beyond".

Hof owned a handful of brothels in Nevada, the only state that allows them to legally operate.

Gillum was favored by polls to win the state, thanks to his strong support from the African American community and young people. Both candidates secured significant donations from real estate professionals in South Florida and throughout the state.

When Hof died, it was already too late to remove his name from the ballot, and ballots had already been printed and mailed.

Hof, 72, was found dead on October 16 by adult film star Ron Jeremy after a weekend of parties celebrating Hof's birthday. I am the one who found him.

Hof's campaign was based on deeply conservative ideals including a hard-line policy on immigration and expansion of gun rights.

He also fought against outlawing brothels. "Nobody ever would do that", Hof said then. "People will set aside for a moment their moral beliefs, their religious beliefs, to get somebody that is honest in office".

If Hof is declared the victor in his district, the seat will be declared vacant and a replacement will be appointed by three commissioners of the district's three counties, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

"This is the new breed of politicians because of what Donald Trump has done".
