Keys loses to Wang, still advances to WTA Elite Trophy semifinals

This year's total prize money is US$2.35 million (S$3.23 million) across the singles and doubles tournaments.

In her sixth WTA final, bidding to reach the third title, she will meet Qiang Wang, who became the first Chinese player to reach the final at the tournament. Wang trails Barty 0-1 in the pair's head-to-head record after falling in straight sets against the Australian in Strasbourg earlier this year. She's hit a career-high ranking, and she's maintained her spot in the top 20 throughout the year, which is not an easy thing to do.

But, no, it is very kind that I think a few people in the world like watching me play.

But first, let me take a selfie: Ash Barty celebrates booking her place in the WTA Elite Trophy final.

Asked in her post-match press conference about her preparation for the two unexpected matches, Wang said: "Well, I'm not prepared".

"It's been a great finish in China this week", said Barty, who completes her season in the best possible way.

Nigeria have lift-off in their World Cup, while Switzerland and Brazil leave it late. That's what we want to do and that is why I made that decision".

The win marks the third title of Barty's career and the second of 2018, following a win at Nottingham earlier this year.

Barty raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening set before 22nd-ranked Wang forced the match back on serve.

"It's been a phenomenal year and I'm looking forward to a bit of holiday and then getting ready for the Australian summer".

The win caps another strong year for Barty who had started 2017 ranked 325 in the world after a two-year sabbatical from the game and spending time playing cricket. Barty once again broke her and sealed the opening set.

She took full advantage - taking down world No.14 and defending champion Julia Goerges in the semi-final before beating Wang in the decider, collecting $828,000 for her week's work.

Barty lost her first round-robin match to Aryna Sabalenka 4-6, 4-6, but a 6-3, 6-4 win over Caroline Garcia was enough for her to qualify for the semifinal.
