President Trump said Monday that the Saudi king strongly denied his government's involvement in the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying the king suggested it could have been "rogue killers".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo greets Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu before their meeting in Ankara, Turkey, October 17, 2018.

Khashoggi's alleged killers tortured the journalist during interrogation by cutting his fingers off, Yeni Safak said, claiming it had heard several recordings of the incident.

"It has been 13 days since the event, so surely proving some of the evidence might be hard, but we believe we will obtain evidence", a Turkish official told Reuters.

The US resident and critic of the Saudi government was last seen entering the consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago. Leaked surveillance video show diplomatic cars traveled to the consul general's home shortly after Khashoggi went into the consulate.

Under increasing global pressure, Saudi Arabia is reportedly trying to piece together an alibi over Khashoggi's disappearance.

"Just spoke to the King of Saudi Arabia who denies any knowledge of whatever may have happened "to our Saudi Arabian citizen", Trump tweeted.

The consul, Mohammad al-Otaibi, left Turkey on a commercial flight bound for Saudi Arabia earlier in the day.
