Jodie Whittaker’s first episode as The Doctor airs tonight

See, I wasn't brought up in a house that watched it, but obviously being British, Doctor Who is a part of your vocabulary without even realising it. This really is the closest you can get to being the Doctor without having a TARDIS.

The fact that a Time Lord can periodically regenerate into another body was itself only invented to allow the show to sidestep the failing health of William Hartnell, who played the first Doctor on TV.

Jodie Whittaker, Chris Chibnall and Matt Strevens revealed VERY IMPORTANT hints about the new season of Doctor Who!

If the show carries on in this vein, it's going to be one hell of a season.

However, Jim Shelley said Whittaker's Doctor was "relentlessly irritating" and the revamp a tame affair lacking in drama. Instead she radiates pragmatism (if pragmatism is a thing that can radiate) and a decidedly middle-class, we're-all-in-this-together enthusiasm. "Because you're. a woman?" If you closed your eyes and listened to her lines being delivered in David Tennant's or Matt Smith's or Peter Capaldi's voice, a lot of them could have worked as written. The monster-of-the-week - a Predator knockoff who looked like he'd been sent by Rita Repulsa to battle the Power Rangers - proved the weakest element, as is often the case.

NY limo crash: Newlyweds and young couples among 20 dead
The modified limo that crashed and killed 20 people wasn't even supposed to be on the road, New York's governor said Monday. They accounted for only one death crash out of 34,439 fatal accidents in 2016, the past year for which data is available.

In it, the Doctor met new companions Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill) and Graham O'Brien (Bradley Walsh) after falling from the sky - and realising she was a woman.

Thank goodness then that it swiftly became an irrelevance, as she set about dealing with two alien baddies who had turned up in Sheffield, one with a face studded with his victims' teeth, the other resembling a giant ball of tagliatelle. I ask Whittaker to help me understand how her Doctor will be different, by asking if she could distill her Doctor to just one dominant trait, boil her down to one aspect what it would be. Not at all. This series is the ideal stepping on point.

Regeneration episodes are always a tricky litmus test for a new Doctor - the new actor spends much of the episode in a manic daze as the new regeneration (and new performer) gets used to moving around in their new skin. And the climactic battle, when it comes, occurs not on some gorgeous windswept alien landscape but on a. construction crane.

The Doctor is a rare figure in popular culture, being a person devoted to solving problems with little more than curiosity and an vast scientific knowledge. In this first outing, Whittaker's Doctor has nailed the basics, and stepped out from the long shadows cast by previous Doctors.
