It's bringing those features over to the main site along with the rest of Gaming. Did you ever use the dedicated YouTube Gaming app?
That's probably due to the relatively modest size of the "vibrant" aforementioned audience, at least compared to the over 200 million people religiously visiting the main YouTube website to watch gaming videos and streams.
In a blog post published today, Google outlined the history and popularity of the YouTube Gaming app - a standalone service that connects viewers with video game-related content on YouTube. The company said there are "tens of thousands of different game pages" for titles big and small on the platform.
"That's why in 2015, we launched YouTube Gaming, a standalone app for gamers where we tested new features like Game Pages for better discoverability, Super Chat and Channel Memberships to help fans show support for their favorite creators, Dark Theme and even a new live streaming platform based on the gaming community's feedback. So we'll be highlighting gaming creators who are "On The Rise" on the Gaming destination and in Trending". In the last 12 months alone, YouTube users have watched more than 50 billion hours of gaming content. If I were to be really picky when it comes to the design, I'd say it's less Twitch-lite and more YouTube, but it's otherwise not that noticeable of a difference. Whether they were Let's Plays of games that were out of our reach, guides on how to complete quests or boss battles, or lore videos that dove deep into a game's story, YouTube was the place to find it all. What's gonna happen to gaming on YouTube versus YouTube gaming app?' And so we're hoping that this time around, with us moving it to YouTube [proper], it's a clear signal to the community that we care very much about gaming, that we want gaming on YouTube ... to continue to thrive and be a big part. In the U.S., you'll also get recommendations of "On The Rise" gaming creators (a new one every week, to be exact), with the feature set to roll out to "more countries in the future".
