Cleveland Browns: Patience with Josh Gordon runs out

Browns announce they are releasing Josh Gordon on Monday

Browns to release WR Josh Gordon

Gordon was ruled out for the Saints game on Saturday due to a hamstring injury despite no mention of the issue on the injury report during the week. Things smelled amusing as he didn't travel with the team like the other injured players and Aaron Goldhammer of ESPN Cleveland even tweeted a lot (in all caps) was going on now with Gordon.

Multiple league sources told ESPN they believe the Browns will ship the troubled receiver before Monday and that Cleveland already has been getting calls about it. "For the past six years, the Browns have fully supported and invested in Josh, both personally and professionally and wanted the best for him, but unfortunately we've reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward".

The 27-year-old receiver has had a tumultuous career in the National Football League filled with highs and lows.

Gordon had a touchdown catch in the Browns' Week 1 tie with Pittsburgh.

First Death in South Carolina Related to Florence Confirmed
As much as 30 to 40 inches (76-102 cm) of rain could fall on coastal areas in North and SC , the National Hurricane Center said. A 61-year-old woman died Friday night when her auto struck a tree that fell during the storm, state emergency officials said.

This franchise has been beyond forgiving to Gordon throughout the years and it appeared they would finally be repaid for that loyalty this season.

Although Gordon has been with the Browns since 2012, he's only played in 41 games over seven seasons, totaling 180 receptions, 3,106 yards, and 16 touchdowns.

The NFL reinstated Gordon last season after he completed a lengthy rehab program.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported shortly after Cleveland's announcement that Gordon was fine at Friday's practice, and his release was over a matter of trust. But given Gordon's talent, it's likely that more than one receiver-needy club will be fascinated by the idea of doing what the Browns ultimately could not: tap into his vast well of talent while also steering him clear of his many troubles. Additionally, Gordon was on the receiving end of five passes that went for gains of at least 20 yards and converted 12 first downs.
