States included in the report are Arkansas, California, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kansas, Illinois, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.

"We are continuing to investigate, but we would like families to know that their children could be exposed to diseases like measles anywhere and unless they're protected with vaccination they are risking potentially serious health effects for their child", Dr. Ulyee Choe, an infectious disease specialist and the county's health director, said in a statement Monday.

While it is rare in the United States, it is still a common disease in places like Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa.

The virus is highly contagious and can linger in the air for about two hours after a person with measles has left the room. The total number of cases that year is the highest number since measles elimination was declared in the U.S. in 2000.

The announcement of the latest cases in Pinellas County comes as the CDC is monitoring an outbreak of measles across almost two dozen states.

Symptoms generally appear about a week to two weeks after a person is infected, the CDC said, and begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 107 people from 21 states have come down with measles through July 14 of this year.

Out of 1,000 people who contract the virus, two to three will die from it.
