Pakistan supports Saudi Arabia in diplomatic row with Canada

Trudeau stands firm amid dispute with Saudi Arabia

Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on Friday held a phone conversation with his Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir, the ministerial spokesperson said. But an apology from Canada or a withdrawal of the human rights concerns Canada raised, is not on the table.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador from Stockholm over criticism by the Swedish foreign minister of Riyadh's human rights record.

This came following the Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland's call on Riyadh to release the so-called "civil society activists" who were arrested in the Kingdom. Her brother, blogger Raif Badawi, has been in prison since 2012 for criticizing the government, but his wife and children live in Quebec and became Canadian citizens earlier this year.

Trudeau stressed that they were keen to communicate directly with the Saudi government in order to re-establish diplomatic relations between the two countries, and pointed out that "the issue of Canada's apology for the criticism of human rights violations were not addressed during the talks".

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced "the freezing of all new trade and investment dealings with Canada and retaining its right to take further action".

"Canadians expect that, and indeed people around the world expect that leadership from Canada", he said.

England had looked like wasting an inspired bowling performance that dismissed India so cheaply on a rain-interrupted second day. He walked off unbeaten on 120*, his efforts (and those of Jonny Bairstow, who made 93) have given England a 250 run lead.

Ukraine is a major exporter of barley to Saudi Arabia, but the wheat is not sold in this country in 2016.

On August 6, Saudi Arabia told Saudi students studying in Canada that their scholarships for studying overseas are being suspended and to move their studies elsewhere, such as the United States or the United Kingdom.

"We're paying close attention to this situation, of course, because we wanted to understand the impacts", he said in Ottawa after being asked if the government meant to hit back at Saudi Arabia with economic reprisals of its own.

The intensity of Saudi Arabia's response has puzzled many, who say it is an extreme reaction to a relatively tame tweet that isn't much different from what Canada has said before.

Canada exported CA$1.37 billion worth of goods to Saudi Arabia past year, mostly tanks and other armored fighting vehicles and their parts, according to Statistics Canada.

Heather Nauert, a U.S. State Department spokeswoman, said Tuesday the urging Canada and Saudi Arabia to use diplomacy to resolve their dispute.
