City started brightly and deservedly went ahead when Sterling brilliantly skipped past two Arsenal challenges on the edge of the box before unleashing a right-footed effort from 20 yards that flew past Cech.

Set what happened on the pitch aside, this was a huge day for Arsenal.

Arsenal go into a Premier League season without Arsene Wenger for the first time since 1996. Emery clearly told the players to play out from the back but they didn't look comfortable and gave away possession on numerous occasions.

Since joining the club earlier this year the striker has scored 10 goals in just 13 league games.

New Arsenal Manager Unai Emery, who makes his Premier League debut with the Gunners on Sunday.

The Argentine global is expected to be given the nod ahead of Gabriel Jesus but it will be interesting to see how the quick-footed striker manages to evade the robust Sokratis in the Arsenal backline.
