"We are committed to producing an entertaining show in three hours", Bailey and Hudson added.
The telecast, which is broadly seen as overly long, will be capped at three hours. The ceremony will also be shortened in length and will take place on an earlier date, effective in 2020. But recent years have seen some of the year's top-grossing films either earn awards exclusively in technical categories or get shut out of the Oscars completely.
All three of these changes, Nielsen-focused as they are, may seem puzzling. until you remember that the Academy's day-to-day activities depend, at least in part, on the sale of TV rights to the Oscars broadcast.
An outstanding popular film category may also go some way to allay criticism that numerous films acknowledged by the Oscars are "increasingly irrelevant" and do not reflect what the viewing public want to watch. That has changed to February 9.
In a letter to members of the Academy, the organization's board of. Specific categories will be determined at a later date, but the winning moments will be edited and aired in a later broadcast.
Eligibility requirements for the new category have not been publicized, either, but several critics have accused the academy of pandering and lessening the stature of the best-picture category.
The letter also announced that the 92nd Oscars will air in an earlier date: February 9, 2020.
Australia's Logie Awards wrestle with a similar issue, in that they have two groups of categories, one voted by the audience, and the other voted by juries of industry professionals. Don't miss the 91st Oscars on ABC on Sunday, February 24, 2019.
'American Pickers' discover Aerosmith's van from 1970s in MA woods
Decades later, the van has been found by none other than the stars of History Channel's hit show " American Pickers ". Luckily for American Pickers , Phil was willing to part with the piece of music history found on his property.
The changes are among the most drastic made to the program in recent years.
It later issued an addendum to its letter, saying: "in creating this award, the Board of Governors supports broad-based consideration of excellence in all films".
We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you.
The addition of a Popular Film category is surely an attempt to make the award show a more appealing event to casual moviegoers who don't necessarily care about anything outside of blockbusters. For instance, this might have done more to hurt "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015) and "Get Out" (2017) than help them.
- Andy Gaudion (@AndyGaudion93) August 8, 2018Add A Best Stunt Category! In order to accomplish this, not all of the categories will be presented live. Organizers did not say which of the 24 awards, which honor everything from acting to sound editing and short films, would be shifted.
- Alice (@alicekatemurray)SERIOUSLY? This is SO disrespectful to the winners!
