"It was important to take that stand on behalf of the intelligence community", Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado on Thursday afternoon, adding, "I believed I needed to correct the record". "I think the overall goal is to sow discord and to get us all to fight against each other rather than understand who the enemy is".
Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, Nielsen created some confusion when she seemed to deny that the Russian attacks on U.S. elections were designed to help Trump.
United States intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian Federation carried out a campaign of hacking and propaganda targeting the 2016 U.S. presidential election in an attempt to sow discord, disparage Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and aid Republican Trump's candidacy.
Nielsen said she believed Russian Federation interfered in the election to "sow discord and get us all to fight against each other".
"I don't think there's any question in the intel community or at DHS that Russians attempted to infiltrate and interfere with our electoral system", she said. "And what the role of DHS is, is to prepare for them to continue to try to use both foreign influence and direct attacks on infrastructure to effect the results of our election". Asked by a different reporter in the audience to clarify whether he was aware of the White House's invitation to Putin to Washington this fall, Coats said frankly, "I think based on my reaction I wasn't aware of that".

Asked whether countries other than Russian Federation had participated in the attack on the 2016 USA election, Nielsen said, "We did not see other nation states involved in the election system meddling".
Nielsen also declined to say whether the systematic separation of migrant children from their parents was a form of child abuse and placed the blame for the policy on Congress's failure to pass immigration reform.
A federal judge last month set a July 26 deadline for the government to reunite the children and their parents, many of whom were fleeing violence in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
"Yes, I did. Yes, I did", Putin said when asked if he'd wanted Trump to win.
Nielsen did note, "Anybody that is advocating violence, we need to work to mitigate".

Phil Nuytten, founder and president of Nuytco, said the ship is on a slight slope with the stern at a depth of about 400 metres. If the wreck is indeed validated in some way or another, then discussions will take place over who can legally lay claim to it.
