American University on lock down after reports of armed intruder near campus, police say

American University in Washington was on lockdown on Wednesday following reports of a man carrying a handgun near its campus, school officials said.

"Reports of armed intruder near campus", the university's police department wrote on Twitter.

DC Police and AU Police are securing the area and conducting a building-by-building search. Lock doors & stay away from windows-If outside, leave campus immediately-Police responding.

The police investigation is focused on Main Campus, East Campus, and 3201 New Mexico, the university said in a tweet. "Campus road closed. Continue to shelter in place", the last tweet as of the time of filing this report said. "I'm not necessarily going to be checking AU's alerts and checking their Twitter page every single day to make sure my life isn't threatened". They will be reunited with parents at nearby National United Methodist Church after the lockdown is lifted.
