Samsung announces first 8GB LPDDR5 DRAM for smartphones

Samsung announces first 8Gb LPDDR5 DRAM chip for mobile devices

The 8Gb LPDDR5 chips also take advantage of a highly optimized circuit architecture to guarantee that the chip is performing up to its ultra-high-speed specification. The prolific DRAM manufacturer is eager to begin mass production as soon as the LPDDR5 specification is formalized.

The new 8Gb LPDDR5 DRAM is the latest addition to the company's premium DRAM lineup, which includes 10nm-class 16Gb GDDR6 DRAM and 16Gb DDR5 DRAM. "We will continue to expand our next-generation 10nm-class DRAM lineup as we accelerate the move toward greater use of premium memory across the global landscape". Current flagship mobile devices use LPDDR4X RAM with 4266Mb/s data rate. Most, if not all, mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and Ultrabooks, employ some sort of low-power DDR (LPDDR) memory. At 6,400 Mbps, LPDDR5 can transfer around 51 GB in one second, which Samsung says is the equivalent of roughly 14 HD video files. The performance advancement was made possible through several architectural enhancements.

All that, and this RAM can also apparently deliver power consumption reductions of up to 30%, so your phone might last longer as well as being faster.

Samsung's goal is to provide a high-speed solution for future 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered mobile devices with its 10nm-class LPDDR5 DRAM chips. When in "active mode", the new LPDDR5 DRAM will automatically lower its voltage in accordance to different application's operating speed in order to save battery life. Additionally, it doesn't overwrite cells with "0" values. Nearly all high-end phones, mobile devices, and even portable PCs these days use LPDDR4X or even just LPDDR4. Also, the new chip will offer a deep sleep mode, which is said to cut the power usage to approximately high the "idle mode" of the current LPDDR4X DRAM.
