It's the second Home Run Derby for Harper, and the first for the rest of the field. Harper has, however, hit 22 home runs, and he'll have the opportunity to hit some more in Monday's slugfest (although they obviously won't count toward his season total).
Each batter gets four minutes per round to hit as many homers as possible, with the victor of each matchup advancing. This will be another tight one as both batters are averaging over 400 feet on the home runs they hit this season, expect an intense showdown from these two with the hometown slugger edging out his division rival. Ties will be broken by a 60-second swing-off during which the clock will not stop and time will not be added. A 45-second timeout is allowed for each player in every round.
By the way, Bregman is the first Astro since Lance Berkman in 2008 to participate in the event.
Hoskins comes into the event with the least home runs, as he now has hit 14.
"I grew up watching the Home Run Derby as a kid, so I think that full circle kind of moment is pretty cool", Hoskins said. Participants took batting practice-style swings, like in the big-league derby, to try and deposit baseballs over a shortened fence installed along the middle of the park's outfield.
Here are the eight players taking part in the Home Run Derby. A more recent example includes Aaron Judge.
He didn't have to worry about that.
As our own Eric Huysman pointed out to me, a few first-time All-Stars are participating in the derby this year. "Now that I can do it, it's a thing you want to do at least once". But Schwarber's power is what I believe will set these two apart in the Derby on Monday. The Derby will be broadcast on ESPN starting at 8 p.m. ET.
