Talking to the media before the one-on-one summit with Putin, Trump did not mention Russia's meddling in the USA election.

Issa called Mueller's indictments "odd-timed", and added that they involved "people who can never be brought to justice and for whom there's even a question of how do we know" they engaged in election meddling.

Coats' statement was seen as an uncommonly brusque pushback by the U.S. intelligence community against the White House.

Trumped stunned United States political allies and foes alike with his answer to a question about Russian hacking and interference in the 2016 election which saw him defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Senator Toomey followed up his initial statement with the following tweet.

Putin offered a new explanation as to why he doesn't have any dirt on Trump to hang over his head.

It was unclear if Senate or House of Representatives leaders would back such a move or how new sanctions might be crafted.

Relations between Washington and Moscow have been at their lowest point in the post-Cold War era.

Mr Trump and his aides have repeatedly tried to lower expectations about what the summit will achieve. I think the USA has been foolish.

"Flattering dictators will not advance American interests".

The comments echo remarks Trump made earlier in the day on Twitter.

Regardless, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats says the attack was and is a viable threat. "We've all been foolish", he said, before veering into discussion about his election victory.

"He said in terms that I don't think President Trump is going to like very much".

Key members of the US Congress, including some Republicans, criticised Trump's performance at the press conference.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, the top Republican in Congress, said Russian Federation undoubtedly interfered in the 2016 election.

'The president must appreciate that Russian Federation is not our ally, ' Ryan, R-Wis., said in a statement.

"Russian Federation has been the most aggressive foreign actor no question and they continue their efforts to undermine our democracy", said Coats in a speech to the Hudson Institute Friday.

While Trump spoke more extensively amid incessant clicks of cameras, Putin said only that "the time has come to talk thoroughly about bilateral relations as well as various hotspots in the world". "The Russians are not our friends and I entirely believe the assessment of our intelligence community".

Trump did not respond; Putin appeared to smirk.

"Just by meeting with Vladimir Putin President Trump is potentially advancing Putin goals, ending some of his isolation after his illegal annexation of Crimea", Senator Chris Coons, D-DE, told Fox News Sunday.

Senate and House Democratic leaders Schumer and Nancy Pelosi went so far as to hint that Trump's conduct might stem from Putin possibly having embarrassing information about him.

Congressman Adam Schiff, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Trump had given Putin "a green light to interfere in 2018".

When Trump said at a debate that Putin had "no respect" for Clinton or then-President Barack Obama, the former secretary of state replied, "Well, that's because he'd rather have a puppet as president of the United States".
