What could it be about Khan, merely a mayor, not even a member of government, that has meant that Trump, the president of the United States, would dedicate so much time to abusing him?

Mr. Trump, an ardent Brexit supporter, arrived in London on Thursday after a tumult of criticism levelled at Prime Minister Theresa May for her handling of Brexit.

The petition against Trump claimed an official state visit would be embarrassing for the Queen.

More recently, in February, Trump once again tried but failed to make hand-to-hand contact with his wife as they departed the White House for a trip to Ohio. Although he will visit the U.S. ambassador's residence, he is largely avoiding central London, where the largest protests are expected Friday.

Thousands of people are expected in Edinburgh at a Carnival of Resistance in the Meadows area. "Immigration is not a crime", said another.

US First Lady Melania Trump tries her hand at lawn bowls as Philip May, right, husband of British Prime Minister Theresa May, watches on. But within days, two senior ministers had quit, departures which Trump said earlier in the week had left Britain in turmoil.

He said that May's new, softer approach to Brexit - which would leave Britain sticking to a "common rulebook" with Brussels on goods - would kill off the chances of a much sought-after U.S. -U.K. trade deal.

Trump further dealt a damaging blow to May by saying he would have handled the Brexit negotiations "much differently". Mundell told media that welcoming the USA president was "an opportunity to strengthen vital links" with a key ally, adding that he hoped Trump enjoyed his stay. "But it's too bad what's going on".

At a news conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Britain on Friday, Trump claimed that a newspaper interview that quoted him criticizing May's Brexit and trade strategies was "fake news."

Brexiteers have craved a US-UK trade deal since Trump made it clear he would seek to thrash out terms once Britain leaves the European Union on Friday March, 2019. "I have a lot of respect for the prime minister".

He said: "The only thing I ask of Theresa is that we make sure we can trade and we don't have any restrictions because we want to trade with the United Kingdom and the United Kingdom wants to trade with us".

Speaking at an impromptu press conference after a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels Trump said the British people shared his concerns on immigration, claiming "that's why Brexit happened".

'I think having a president with those roots, that has spent so much time in those places, is a lovely thing'.

He said: "I read reports where that won't be possible, but I believe after speaking with the prime minister's people and representatives and trade experts it will absolutely be possible".

But he said that the investment had done "wonders for the area" and that his Scottish grandmother would be "smiling down" from heaven in pride at the work in her native land.
