Giuliani reiterated the president's nickname for special counsel Robert Mueller's probe-"witch hunt"-and claimed the probe should be wrapped up as soon as possible".

"No, you didn't", Connolly said.

Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen (Tenn.) said Thursday that he would give embattled Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok a Purple Heart if he could.

Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert went after FBI agent Peter Strzok during a televised House committee hearing Thursday for cheating on his wife with colleague Lisa Page druing the investigations into Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

"At no time in any of these texts did those personal beliefs enter into the realm of any action I took", Strzok testified. And my presumption, based on that awful, disgusting behavior, that the American population would not elect somebody demonstrating that behavior to be president of the United States.

"They would not tolerate any improper behavior in me anymore than I would tolerate it in them", Strzok said. "That is who we are as the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Some Democrats applauded after he finished speaking.

Trump himself has launched personal attacks against the two Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, including a Wednesday evening tweet that asked "how can the Rigged Witch Hunt proceed when it was started, influenced and worked on, for an extended period of time" by Strzok.

Such a resolution would avoid disruption to automakers and other manufacturers that source parts from multiple countries. The UK will maintain a "common rulebook" for all goods traded with the European Union , including agricultural products.

But in defending himself and his agency, Strzok had to weather hours of attacks by Republicans, whose accusations drifted from personal animus toward President Donald Trump to blatant lying and moral misconduct with a senior Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer, Lisa Page.

Meadows called Page a "very credible witness", and said she had been "falsely accused" of not wanting to cooperate with the committee, a charge that had been levied by his fellow Republicans and President Trump. "That is bias. Agent Strzok may not see it but the rest of the country does, and it is not what we want, expect or deserve from any law enforcement officer much less the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said he thought it was against House rules to impugn the character of a witness. Goodlatte eventually let the hearing proceed without calling the panel into recess. Strzok says he never allowed personal opinions to taint his work.

During the daylong meeting, Strzok sparred with Republicans, who lashed out at him in often sharply personal exchanges.

Mr Strzok denied that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was biased against then-candidate Trump and rejected that his actions in the Russian Federation probe after the 2016 election had political motivations.

Strzok later replied that he has "always told the truth". "As someone who loves this country and cherishes its ideals, it is profoundly painful to watch and even worse to play a part in".

Today Lisa Page will be questioned by members of Congress in a closed-door session, having had the benefit of watching Strzok's testimony on Thursday.

"It wasn't the discovery of your texts, Mr. Strzok".
