On the down side, the balloting felt unduly generous to a disjointed second season of HBO's "Westworld", which ranked behind only "Game of Thrones" - back in the race after a year hiatus - in terms of total nominations, tied with "Saturday Night Live", and followed by "The Handmaid's Tale".
Netflix claiming the top spot at the awards this year isn't just about ousting HBO, it's a milestone for streaming services as a whole. The company spends about $8 billion a year on new shows and films, far exceeding HBO and other competitors. "The Handmaid's Tale" contributed to 27 nominations for Hulu, while "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" helped Amazon collect 22. Adrift in third was NBC with 78 nods.
Netflix favorites GLOW and Kimmy Schmidt got nods for best comedy series while HBO mainstays Curb Your Enthusiasm and Silicon Valley were also nominated in the category. Although it's up for top series honours, it drew only three supporting actor bids for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage. Donald Glover himself nabbed the Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Earn in the show, Brian Tyree Henry, who plays Glover's cousin Alfred (AKA Paper Boi) was nominated for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Zazie Beets, who plays Van, Earn's co-parent and somewhat-girlfriend, was nominated for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Other big winners for Netflix included Godless and the female wrestling comedy GLOW.

Al Pacino, Kyle MacLachlan, and Michael B. Jordan were all in the hunt but missed out. The show, which was canceled after Roseanne Barr's racist tweet last month, was skipped over for Outstanding Comedy Series.
