Pompeo pushes back against North Korea's "gangster" comment

North Korea says it won’t bow down to “gangster-like” U.S. on denuclearization

Pompeo shrugs off NKorea's 'gangster' rebuke, cites...

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that China may be "exerting negative pressure" on North Korea, which this weekend criticised Washington's demands for denuclearisation, because of the trade war he launched against China last week. "It can be your miracle in North Korea as well", Pompeo said.

Pompeo said that while he saw progress in Pyongyang, the United States was not relaxing the current sanctions regime or changing its "ironclad" commitment to defend allies South Korea and Japan.

Graham then had a message for Pyongyang, referencing the fact that Kim Yong Chol, a top adviser to Kim Jong-un and a former spy chief, had asked Pompeo if he slept well during his visit to North Korea.

After discussions in Pyongyang, North Korea's foreign ministry said that the USA was making unilateral demands aimed at forcing it into giving up its nuclear arsenal.

Hours earlier Saturday, North Korea slammed what it called the US' "gangster-like mindset" during the talks, according to a report by state media.

The North Korean statement indicated such gestures hadn't gone far enough, saying the U.S. moves were "highly reversible" and left its military force intact "without scraping even a rifle".

Leaked U.S. intelligence findings have concluded that North Korea does not intend to give up its nuclear program completely. He left with a harsh reminder that the North Korean leader expects something in return.

"If I were President Trump, I would not let China use North Korea to back me off of the trade dispute".

Just a few weeks before the Singapore summit, Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping "could be influencing" Kim from behind the scenes shortly after Kim went to Dalian, China, for his second meeting with Xi.

"We know it is a real possibility because we see how Vietnam has travelled this remarkable path", Mr Pompeo said. "It can be your miracle in North Korea as well", Mr Pompeo said.

"The United States has been clear about what we seek from North Korea to set in motion this great chain of events", Pompeo said in Hanoi. "The choice now lies with North Korea and its people".

"It seems the USA misunderstood our goodwill and patience", the statement said.

"The North Koreans are in the game to get, not to give", said Daniel Russel, the top USA diplomat for East Asia until previous year.

A former top USA diplomat for Asia, Daniel Russel, said the setback was to be expected and warned Trump he is engaged in a long negotiation that would not produce easy quick, made for television results that the president likely wants.

"But a rushed summit and demands that NK denuclearize in short order or else is not a serious test of diplomacy", Haass tweeted. The accusation came after Pompeo visited Pyongyang and declared that the talks were productive.

Suspending the drills cannot be compared, the statement said, with North Korea's irreversible destruction of an underground nuclear testing site - though some U.S. analysts have questioned the importance of that move, which was more symbolic than anything else given the relative ease with which new tunnels could be dug and the progress North Korea has already made in developing explosive nuclear devices.

USA officials claim that the two countries have established working groups to address the details of and implement an agreement.

This, he said, has "stoked distrust and increased the danger of war".
