Canada's retaliatory tariffs on over 60 U.S. imports come into effect Sunday

Especially after Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and called out Canada's dairy industry.

"Escalating tariffs against the United States does nothing to help Canada".

Canada responded to the US on Friday by imposing $12.6 billion in retaliatory tariffs against American products that will take effect on Sunday.

In the Fox News interview, Trump said he proposed to his G7 partners at last month's summit in Quebec that they remove all trade-related barriers and taxes.

Trump, however, has said he wants to wait until after November's USA congressional midterms before committing to a new agreement. But that effort has stalled, and Trump said Sunday that he didn't expect a deal that he could support until after the USA midterm elections in November.

"It's awesome that a president, under the banner of "America First" and trying to advance the interest of his nation, is considered bad by the overwhelming majority of the American media and as much of the American people as it is", says Seton Motley of Less Government.

"I'm not here with a Make America Great hat on my head, I'm just here because we're celebrating the anniversary of our neighbour in a neighbourly way", Derek Burney said at the event as he raised his voice to be heard over the sound of country music from a nearby speaker.

That effort is expected to intensify following Monday's election win by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has already said he supports the continued renegotiation of NAFTA and wants his own team of experts to be part of the talks before he takes office December 1. Canada will tax US steel exports at a rate of 25%, and the rest of the goods will be taxed at a 10% rate.

On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with Lopez Obrador by phone.

The president went on to say: "You're going to have an election, it's going to be very interesting". Do you know what happened?

NAFTA has been in effect since the beginning of 1994, but renegotiations between the U.S., Canada and Mexico started previous year and are still ongoing.

He said he hoped the Americans would resume NAFTA talks because Canada is ready to get back to the table.

"The president is working to trying to fix the broken system and he's going to continue pushing for that".

Following his overwhelming majority win, Mexico's president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he supports reaching a deal on renegotiating NAFTA with the United States and Canada.
